About Us

Daniel A Edelson

Daniel A. Edelson

Professor Daniel Edelson is Director of Academic Success at Seton Hall Law School and founder of USLawEssentials which provides legal English training, resources, and courses for international students and attorneys.

An experienced attorney who practiced business litigation in New York City and New Jersey for over 10 years, Daniel also previously lived and taught English in Japan for five years and taught US law in South Korea. He has also taught US law and legal English to international students and attorneys online to students and attorneys around the world.

Prior to joining Seton Hall Law, he taught legal English and transnational law courses to LLM students at St. John’s Law School.

Stephen Horowitz

Professor Stephen Horowitz is an experienced lawyer and linguist who appreciates student-centered teaching, active learning, and creative approaches to integrating legal and language learning and enjoys developing unique and high quality online legal English curriculum. 

He also runs the Georgetown Legal English Blog (which includes the Legal English Resources page), is co-host of the USLawEssentials Law & Language podcast which includes the Multilingual Lawyer interview series, and administers the ETLEP Google Group, the listserv for the community of legal English professionals. In his prior role as Director of Legal English Programs at St. John’s University School of Law, he built St. John’s Legal English program and also enjoyed developing innovative approaches to helping LLM students improve their language and writing in preparation for the bar exam. 

Professor Horowitz previously worked as a bankruptcy lawyer at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and later went on to create the Bankruptcy Bill cartoon series. After graduating from university, he taught English in the junior high schools of Kariya City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on the JET Program and subsequently spent time studying law at Waseda University in Tokyo and interning for Japanese lawyers in Tokyo and Nagoya. 

He currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the JET Alumni Association USA and is an avid ultimate frisbee player having played in tournaments all across the U.S. and around the world.
